salt-pitcher
Salt Pitcher

Description: A small salt-glazed pitcher with a full, wheel-thrown body, a high applied handle and a pinched pouring lip — the everyday jug of the French farmhouse kitchen. The deep chestnut glaze pools and shifts across the shoulder where the walls curve, catching the light, and the foot is left raw so you can see the stoneware underneath.

Best Use: It pours cream, olive oil or a vinaigrette as easily as it did a century ago, and it is just as happy holding a short-stemmed bunch of garden flowers on a kitchen table. Group it with other stoneware of varying heights, or let it stand on its own.

About Poterie Renault
For five generations the Renault family made culinary stoneware in one of the oldest working potteries in France, founded in 1847. This was never decorative ware — it was the working stock of French kitchens and bistros: the deep crocks that held a cassoulet through a long simmer, the jars that kept the winter stores, the wide bowls that took a morning café au lait. Every piece is thrown from stoneware clay dug in the region around the factory and fired past 1200°C, which is what makes it oven-safe, non-porous and genuinely built to be used rather than looked at. The finish comes from salt: at peak temperature coarse sea salt is thrown into the kiln's fireboxes, vaporises into a sodium cloud, and settles onto the clay as the faintly pitted, orange-peel glaze you can feel under your thumb. The factory closed in 2016 and what remained sat for the better part of a decade before we bought it — so what we have is what is left. Expect subtle shifts in the earthy glaze and small marks from the wood- and gas-fired kilns; they are the point, not a fault. Use them the way they were used for a century — a butter crock is just as happy holding salt, dried herbs or a paintbrush, the water jugs keep a table's drinks properly cold, the pie dish goes from oven to table — or plant straight into them, which is what a lot of ours go home to do. No two are identical, and when these are gone there will not be more.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0656/7198/7444/files/PRODUCT-2002_35ea17fe-2db8-4153-b3d4-531ea2c9a7af.jpg?v=1789593109
