"Nordic Mountain Ridge"
Nordic Mountain Ridge
by Stig Wernheden (Swedish, 1921–1997)
A dark, shadowy peak rises from a sunlit alpine valley, its rugged slopes caught under a sweep of soft white clouds and pale blue sky. Below, a band of bright chartreuse pasture glows against the mountain's slate and indigo, the kind of light that makes you want to stand still and take it all in.
The painter is Stig Wernheden, who trained in Malmö in the years just after the war and went on to travel widely through Europe before returning home to Sweden to exhibit. He became known for landscapes with a quiet nod to Cubism, and you can see it here: the mountain isn't so much described as built, from flat, angular planes of gray, blue and shadow that catch the light like facets of stone. His work is held in museum collections in Malmö and Ystad.
It's a confident, modern take on the Scandinavian landscape, bold enough to anchor a room yet calm enough to live with every day. Hang it over a sideboard, in a study or anywhere you'd like a window onto open country. Housed in a light silver-gilt frame with a textured linen-style inner mat.
